What can you
say? In the Western World, Socrates & Plato are it.
It has been commented, and we cannot remember by whom,
that the worlds philosophers are footnotes to Plato.
Though this statement does great injustice to both pre
and post Socratic philosophy, it does emphasize Plato's
importance, and, in a way, put philosophy (in its greek
meaning - friend or lover of wisdom - philos - sophos) as
the way of life, learning, and thinking, derived from a
Socratic foundation. Many consider Aristotle completely
distinct from Plato, but it seems that most of
Aristotle's works are explications on the Pre-Socratics
and Plato (the points where Aristotle flagrantly
contradicts Plato are trivial, and even then it is
usually a point made in a particular context in a
particular work - thus one must first understand the
referred work of Plato in all its complexity to see if
Aristotle really does disagree with Plato or a point
raised in a particular context.)
Right now we
have the complete texts of Plato's
Apology,
Crito,
Phaedo,
Symposium, and
Meno.
We will always be adding to
our own book collection, but one excellent online
resource for books is at Project Gutenberg.
